Craig Longmuir

Craig paints the Peak District landscape from direct observation using oil paint on canvas. His intention is to describe the unique experience of being in the environment by using thin washes of paint, impasto brush marks, skeins of dripped, spattered paint and drawing sgraffito with the end of the brush into the surface.

Biography

Craig paints the Peak District landscape from direct observation using oil paint on canvas. His intention is to describe the unique experience of being in the environment by using thin washes of paint, impasto brush marks, skeins of dripped, spattered paint and drawing sgraffito with the end of the brush into the surface.

He likes to try to create a tension between the image being recognisable and being abstracted. Colour is also used expressively to convey something of the emotional response to the landscape as opposed to generating a more literal description.

Craig also draws the landscape en plein air using black ink and Chinese Ukiyo-e brushes. His drawings describe the shapes as well as the tone and mood of the environment.
