Anita Lomas
Anita is a natural fibre weaver and basketmaker. Her contemporary pieces are handwoven using a variety of garden plant fibres and willow bark.
Biography
Anita is a natural fibre weaver working with a diverse range of plant materials and willow bark. Many of the fibres she uses are grown in her own garden, with particular favourites including daffodil, iris, day lily and red hot poker leaves.
She finds deep reward in working with plant materials nurtured in a place of personal connection and meaning. Transforming what would naturally die back into forms of quiet elegance allows her to preserve a fleeting moment of nature, giving it new life and presence.
Anita’s work is characterised by meticulous attention to detail and a refined finish. Weaving is inherently structured and intentional, guided by pattern and order. These qualities are woven together with her name, resulting in pieces that are unmistakably made in a Much Nita way.
After a career in graphic design and many years spent in an office environment, Anita felt an increasing pull to reconnect with the outdoors. She retrained as a basketmaker, achieving a City & Guilds distinction in 2018. Initially working with willow, the Covid years, with no access to willow, prompted her to turn instead to the plants growing in her own garden. There she discovered the true reward of connecting two passions: gardening and weaving.
Natural fibre weaving has long been practised across the Southern Hemisphere, yet remains less widely known in the UK. Exploring soft plant materials she has grown and cared for creates a deeper connection to each piece, forming an organic cycle from cultivation to art form.
