Richard Hanby
Biography
Richard was originally inspired by the Islamic tiles found in southern Spain and Morocco. After cheekily asking a traditional Spanish tilemaker for their glaze recipe in 2020, he initially set out to try and replicate some of the traditional designs and colours found in the Alhambra Palace in Granada and other locations across Andalucia.
He has more recently been influenced by mid-century motifs and is gradually incorporating these ideas into his designs. He is also currently experimenting with unpredictable glazes with interesting results.
The finished surfaces he creates are more than the sum of the individual tiles; repetition of simple elements, with the imperfection that handbuilding brings, can create a finish that appears almost organic when viewed as a whole.
Richard’s tiles are available by commission. Tiles can often be made in larger or smaller versions, depending on whether they are to be used in a functional domestic setting or for a smaller feature or framed display.
