Biography

Philip is a South Derbyshire based ceramicist who has made pots for over forty years.
He concentrates on making thrown pieces during the summer and hand-built pieces during the colder months of the year.
He is particularly interested in developing worn surfaces. Inspiration is gained from taking photographs and making drawings from a variety of places both at home and abroad. Recent pieces have been influenced by visits to Herculanium, Pompeii, and Sorrento in Italy. He uses a variety of different clays and also creates various stained porcelain slips to add colour within his work. Various glazes are developed by ongoing experiments using test tiles in most firings. All of his work is taken to a stoneware temperature of 1260 degrees centigrade with many pieces being multi-fired. Some of his hand built vessels have additions of gold leaf.

Philip sells his work via the Round House Gallery, Foston, Derbyshire which he established with his wife Leah in1989. His work is also sold via leading specialist auction houses and a small number of galleries. He also exhibits at a few ceramic fairs each year.
