Biography
Maya is a historical Costumier and textile artist. She creates clothing for re-enactment, musuems and media.
She also teaches historic sewing techniques, both in museums and in higher education.
She works on comission but also creates off-the-peg historically inspired garments made from natural materials. She specialises in working women’s clothing, handsewing and corsetry.
In 2024, she was awarded a training bursary from Heritage Crafts and The Costume Society, to train in historic corsetry, specialised skills and work under high profile makers.
Although more functional in nature, she feels her work and its traditions and forgotten techniques turns her creations into works of art. Looking closer at them can reveal hidden details, skill in small actions. Through her work, clients can feel connected to the past and textile heritage, and own a little piece of it.
Most recently she is working on creating more courses to bring historic sewing techniques to the wider public.
