Jill Ray

Jill creates prints by drawing digitally and paints in oils.

Biography

Jill has been a practising Artist and Designer for over 30 years. She trained first in Fine Art then followed a career as a Landscape Architect until 2012 when she launched Jill Ray Landscapes combining her design and fine art skills.

She developed her print technique whilst practising as a Landscape Architect, providing clear, accessible images for public consultation she discovered what a great drawing tool her PC was. Jill loves the way layers of translucent blocks of colour can build up an image and her passion for making images this way combined with a rekindling of her previous love of painting in oils on canvas. She now enjoys exploring both old and new technology in the development of her work often using an iPad as a portable sketchbook.

Jill’s main concerns are colour, light and the rhythms of landscape, particularly the way shapes and patterns echo and repeat in the landscape as can be seen in both the striking and bold style of her prints which often resemble the effects of overlaid layers of tissue paper.

The hills of the Dark Peak, the woodlands in Sheffield and Chatsworth and Britain’s coastline provide most of her subject matter.
Enquiries are welcome as are visits to her studio in Sheffield to view work by appointment.
