Michéla Griffith

Images of, and inspired by, water. Created in camera, they are often mistaken for paintings.

An extended dialogue with the River Dove near Michela’s home has led to a dramatically different and highly individual photographic practice. By working locally and through experimentation Michela has developed a clear vision and a distinctive style: she no longer looks to record that which she sees, but to interpret it, to paint an impression that over time brings her a little closer to her own relationship with the land and with nature’s dynamic. Her images may even help you rediscover an area that you believe you know well. Current work explores natural mark-making, with water as canvas, and mixes paint with pixel.

“Michela has a rarified photographic vision; her understated themes result in images of great stillness and beauty. She turns the everyday into the universal in photographs that are positioned in a place between the representational and the abstract.”
Jo Rose, The Joe Cornish Galleries, 2018

Her work has been exhibited widely, including as part of Lichfield Festival Visual Arts Exhibition; The Chatsworth Festival Art Out Loud; Derbyshire Open Arts; Buxton Art Trail; and at Brighton Photo Fringe (‘Over the Hill’, ‘Over Hills and Seas’).

Her work has been commended in competitions, and featured in publications including “Artsbeat”, “Derbyshire Life”, “Staffordshire Life”, and “The Derbyshire Magazine”. Michela carries out interviews for, and contributes to, “On Landscape” magazine.
