A winning design from Joanna Allen

Joanna is celebrating her success, as the designer of the 2018 Fringe Brochure

Joanna Allen has been celebrating as her work has been selected to be the front cover design for the 2018 Buxton Fringe Brochure. Joanna is an artist and print-maker from New Mills, she created a vibrant design which also cleverly incorporates features of Buxton’s architecture. There will be around 20,000 programmes, which feature her artwork, printed and distributed in both the lead up to and during the Fringe Festival, in addition the work will also be featured on the Fringe’s flyer which is distributed at the beginning of the year.

Joanna has a playful approach to creating her works and she enjoys layering her intaglio prints with mixed media, utilizing watercolour, inks, bleach and soft pastels in combination to create a wonderfully rich and decorative surface.

Joanna’s winning design is a collagraph print entitled ‘Orange Festival Folk’ when discussing the inspiration and ideas behind the design Joanna explained that the design “celebrates the diversity of people of all types and ages who take part in the Fringe and make it so special. I tried to combine all the elements that make Buxton such a unique town: the historical importance of the natural mineral water, the spectacular architecture and the people. Each festival person has a ‘hat’ which references one of Buxton’s significant architectural features, mostly the town’s numerous domes, both big and small. And of course I had to include an image of spring water flowing from the lion’s mouth at St Ann’s Well!”

In addition to designing the cover of the Fringe Brochure Joanna will also be taking part in the Fringe as well when she exhibits her work at PDA’s Great Dome Art Fair in July.
