The Adam and Eve Project – A Touring Exhibition

Five members of PDA have contributed work on the theme of Adam and Eve as part of a touring exhibition created by thirteen leading local artists

A group of thirteen leading artists based in and around Derbyshire and Staffordshire, five of which are members of Peak District Artisans, have been very busy producing artwork in preparation for The Adam & Eve Project.

The thirteen artists who have been involved in the project are Duncan Pass, Michael Cook, Anna Thomas, Simon Manby/Lee Mackay, R C Clarke, Rebecca Mercer, Janet Turville, the five PDA members who have been participating in the project are John Rattigan, Roger Sutton, Sarah Sharp, Sue Prince and Elizabeth Forrest.

The artists brief was to make a personal response to the time honoured narrative of Adam & Eve and in particular to reimagine some key aspect from its well established iconography; whether this is the Garden of Eden/Paradise setting, or the symbolism associated with the Serpent/Tree of Knowledge/Forbidden Fruit. Equally, because of the historical pedigree that surrounds this theme – encapsulating as it does everything from medieval stained glass and illuminated scripts, through Masaccio and Rembrandt to Chagall and Klimt – each artist was able to choose from aspects of art history as a starting point.

This project builds on the success of the group exhibition ‘A Derbyshire Passion – Stations of the Cross’ which was held at Derby Cathedral in March 2015 and was originally initiated by artist Michael Cook.

The Adam & Eve Project will be a touring exhibition starting off at the St John’s Street Gallery, this exhibition will preview on 15th June and will run from 16th June until 1st July 2017 in order to coincide with the annual Ashbourne Festival. Following on from the exhibition at St John’s Street Gallery it will then tour to the following venues – Southwell Minster 29th July – 20th August 2017 with a preview on Friday 28th July; Melbourne Festival, Melbourne Village 16th – 17th September 2017; St Chads Church, Stafford 25th September – 8th October 2017; Doveridge Art Show, Doveridge Village 25th – 26th November and Brampton Art Gallery, Newcastle under Lyme 13th January – 25th February 2018.
