Ilkeston-born artist celebrates fifty-seven years with a personal exhibition at Erewash Museum

An award-winning painter and ceramicist from Ilkeston will show work from his fifty-seven-year-long career at Erewash Museum Ilkeston.

Paintings by Gary Sampson, A Retrospective, is a solo exhibition showing work from 1958 to 2014. Gary, who now lives in Elton, describes the show as an opportunity to reflect on his career as an artist and of particular significance is that he was born in Ilkeston.

“My most profound inspiration has been the stimuli I have obtained from the visual world, particularly that of the local environment I’ve experienced at different phases of my life.” He explains.

“I want this exhibition to show the highly personal way my imagery has developed through the shifts between semi-abstraction and figuration.”

Although the majority of paintings are selected from the last 20 years, culminating with his current works, there are earlier paintings that show his connection with Ilkeston and also emphasise his all-embracing fascination with his environment.

Now an active member of Peak District Artisans and the Northern Potters Association, Gary takes part in a number of annual exhibitions including the Fine Art and Design Fair at Chatsworth, which runs from 6th Jan to 13th March. His work can also be found on permanent display at Buxton Museum, Ilkeston Museum amongst other local venues.
Paintings by Gary Sampson, A Retrospective runs at Erewash Museum Ilkeston from 10th Feb to 30th March 2016.
