Rob Wilson captures the Ashes at Emirates Old Trafford

PDA member Rob Wilson featured on Sky Sports Test Match coverage painting the England v Australia Test Match

PDA member artist Rob Wilson was commissioned by Lancashire County Cricket Club to record the return of the England versus Australia Ashes Test Match to Old Trafford. The Test Match was returned to Lancs CCC following the club’s multi-million pound, state of the art redevelopment of their Emirates Old Trafford ground.
Rob’s body of work included several paintings of the new ground developments. He also covered several Lancashire CCC games before the Test Match began. The series was completed with a number of paintings produced ‘en plein air’ during the Test Match itself. Rob was pictured painting during the Sky Sports Test Match coverage with an eccentric commentary from David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd accompanying the shots.
Many of Rob’s Ashes paintings were also featured on BBC North West Tonight, after the Ashes had been retained by England when rain stopped play.
In all Rob completed 9 large paintings and these will now go on display at a solo exhibition ‘The Ashes’ at Contemporary Six – The Gallery in the Royal Exchange Arcade, Manchester from 16th-30th August.
Speaking after the match Rob said: “I was delighted to be invited to capture this momentous event. It was quite nerve wracking at first, painting live under the gaze of cameramen and officials but I soon got used to it. I was able to meet many of the players and I thoroughly enjoyed working on the project. I hope people will come along to Contemporary Six Gallery now to view the complete series of paintings.”
